Internet Safety - 8 Tips for parents
1. Learn everything you can about computers, the internet and related technology
Develop and maintain proficiency through use.
Ask your children to demonstrate
Learn the terminology and abbreviations that are commonly used.
2. Communicate with you children
Take time to discuss your concerns.
Formulate ground rules and monitor to make sure they are being followed.
Understand your children's needs.
Set reasonable expectations.
3. Place the computer in a "Well trafficked" area.
Do not allow children to have computers in their bedroom or other secluded areas.
Spot check to see what it is they are doing while on the computer.
4. Ensure that they do not divulge detailed personal information when completing profiles.
5. Keep ALL accounts in YOUR name.
6. Know your child's passwords and screen names.
Ensure that screen names do not provide information about his or her identity. (eg., SarahSweet16).
Help your child create their screen name.
Use strong passwords on your accounts or websites to prevent your child from getting around blocked content.
7. Learn about and consider use of Computer/ Internet Management Software.
Parental controls and software available to limit site access.
Filtering and Blocking software.
Activity logs (Records websites visited).
Screenshot and capture software.
8. Periodically review:
Internet bookmarks
History files
Temporary Internet Files
Keyword searches
Teach your children to remember the 4 R's
Recognize techniques used by online predators to deceive their victims.
Refuse requests for personal information.
Respond assertively if you are ever in an uncomfortable situation while online. Exit the program, log off or turn off the computer.
Report to law enforcement authorities, any suspicious or dangerous contact that makes you uncomfortable.
